The moon... again!

I thought I'd posted about these pictures, but apparently not! They were taken very shortly after my last post about lunar photography so that's probably why. I know I take a lot of photos of the moon, but the level of detail that you can capture that the human eye can't see fascinates me.

My first set of photos in the previous post were taken on a hazy evening, there was a light layer of cloud so almost all of the detail was removed from the shot. I was still impressed with the images considering the lens I'd used only cost me £30!

It was a few nights after taking these photos that I arrived home, and noticed the sky was completely clear. So, as I usually do when I get the opportunity, I grabbed my tripod and set up outside.

I took a few images, and as this was only my second time shooting FULLY in manual mode I took the opportunity to experimentation with the settings to find the best way of capturing photos of the moon with this particular lens. Unfortunately, because it's been so long I can't for the life of me remember what settings I used... lol!

Anyway, the resultant image is displayed below...

Far more detail, I'm sure you'll agree. I decided not to crop it, as I think I went a little overboard on the unsharp mask in Elements. So far definitely the best shot I have though!

If you're interested in the techniques required to take pictures of the moon, my friend wrote a great guide... check it out here!

  1. Great work! Massive improvement over last time. Perhaps you did go a bit overboard on the unsharp mask, but the detail is good. I would probably have given it half or one stop less exposure. Up to you whether you stop down the aperture for more sharpness, or reduce the shutter speed for less atmospheric turbulence!
