I'm sure you'll agree that this is a little different to the usual challenges and I'll be honest, it wasn't my favourite... However, it got me doing something different!
Having just had a batch of ducklings hatch I decided to theme the magazine around this. I'm happy with the template, but I'm not happy with the main photo. I really couldn't be bothered to take a different photo... lol!
The challenge let me get my geek on a little!
Not as many entries as usual this week, I imagine it wasn't every ones cup of tea. Therefore, I'm just going to post one favourite this week, which belongs to Katey Bell. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a dog lover?!
This weeks challenge is 'Abstract Colour'. Not so much a theme, but another exercise. The challenge reads as follows:
Hi everyone! It’s my turn to set a challenge again.
Like last time, this isn’t a “theme” based challenge, but is an exercise that you can do in the comfort of your own home which should allow you to come up with some nice abstract images.
You will need:
- A camera (obviously!) If you’ve got a macro lens, or have a macro setting on your camera (it usually looks like a tulip) then that may be useful as well.
- A glass of water
- Some food colouring
- A piece of foil, silver mylar, or silver reflective wrapping paper
Lay the foil out on a flat surface with the shiniest side up. The wrinkle the foil a little so that it’s no longer a perfectly flat surface, but instead has some peaks/troughs/ridges or creases in it. If you need to, hold the foil in place with the weights.
- Some small weights (stones from the garden will do)
Now place the glass of water on or near the foil and add the food colouring.
The idea is to take a photo of the abstract colours and shapes which form on the foil when you look down on it from above. Don’t take a photo of the glass of water, but instead try to fill the frame with the foil.
You may have to search around the foil a bit, move the glass of water or add a second glass to try and find an interesting composition.
If you’ve got a macro setting, you can use it to get in close and stay in focus. If you don’t have a macro setting, you might want to shoot from further away, but crop the image afterwards. Or perhaps turn your auto focus off and get in close anyway, you might get an interesting result!
If you have a light source (eg a torch, a desk lamp or a window) try rearranging the setup so that the light goes through the glass and onto the foil from different angles. Add more glasses of water with different colours, try different shaped glasses, or try adding a few drops of water to the foil itself!
Give it a go and post the results! The Usual Rules apply (as do the new submission guidelines) lets see what we can come up with.

This challenge was inspired by this post on Ultimate Photo Tips, which has loads of other interesting ideas…
You'll see from my dumb comments that I didn't get what the task was initially, but now I understand it I'm really looking forward to it! Definitely one for the weekend!
Hi Lee!
ReplyDeleteYou say you're not happy with the main photo on your cover, can you explain what you don't like about it, what would have made it better?
I've got some ideas about what I think would make it better but it would be interesting to hear how you're thinking about it!
As for the low turn out, I didn't take part because my camera has died (or rather, the focusing motor in my go-to lens has died and I don't enjoy shooting with my other glass)
Hi Paul,
DeleteTo be honest, I was just being mega lazy. I've been so so busy recently that I'm burned out!
The ducklings head is out of focus, that's the main thing. I also don't like the background. I wanted to take a picture of one cupped in my hand, however, holding a duckling one handed is impossible, they're like feathery worms!!
I really didn't focus much on the photography this week, it was just an excuse to get my geek on in photoshop a little be a part time graphic designer.
Your feedback would be appreciated as always.)
Sorry to hear about your camera, I can't imagine being without mine now, it would be like losing a limb!
